Each tonbodama, made by winding molten glass, has a pattern unlike any other. The hands-on experience itself becomes a story unique to a visit to Otaru. At "Yuki Akari no Michi," running since 1999, floats color the canal and snowy paths. Glass born as a practical tool still illuminates this town as light.

03 浮き玉文（うきだまもん） Ukidama (Glass Fishing Float) Pattern 🔶 小樽のガラス産業の原点を伝える、歴史的な意匠に 意味 / Meaning 明治から大正にかけてのニシン漁全盛期、漁具として使われた ガラス製の浮き玉を文様化したもの。小樽の浅原硝子 製造所 （現・北一硝子）が 1910年に製造を始め、電気やプラスチックの 普及後も、小樽ガラスのルーツとして今なお象 徴的存在。 A motif depicting the glass fishing floats used as fishing gear during the peak of herring fishing from the Meiji to Taishō eras.
