1891年の最初のガラス製造から、ニシン漁の浮き
溶けたガラスを巻きつけて作るとんぼ玉は、同じ模
1999年から続く「雪あかりの路」では、浮き玉が運
玉、家庭の石油ランプ。実用品としての需要が、小
様が二つとない。旅の記念に手作りする体験そのも
河や雪道を彩る。実用品として生まれたガラスが、
樽をガラスの街に育てた。
のが、小樽らしい物語になる。
今も光としてこの街を照らしている。
From the first glass production in 1891, through
herring-fishing floats and household kerosene
lamps—practical demand raised Otaru into a town of
glass.
Each tonbodama, made by winding molten glass, has a
pattern unlike any other. The hands-on experience itself
becomes a story unique to a visit to Otaru.
At "Yuki Akari no Michi," running since 1999, floats color
the canal and snowy paths. Glass born as a practical tool
still illuminates this town as light.

とんぼ玉・渦巻き文（とんぼだま・うずまきもん）
Tonbodama — Spiral Pattern
🔶 小樽旅行の記念品、アクセサリーの意匠に
意味 / Meaning
色の付いたガラス棒をバーナーで溶かし、芯棒に巻きつけて 作る「とんぼ玉」の代表的な模様。異なる色のガラスを渦
状に 重ねることで生まれる、一つとして同じもののない意匠。小樽では 旅の記念に手作り体験できる人気の工芸品。
A representative tonbodama pattern, made by melting colored glass rods with a burner and winding them around a core rod. Layering
different colored glass in a spiral creates a design where no two beads are ever quite the same—a popular hands-on craft experience for
visitors to Otaru.

意味 / Meaning
ガラスの中に小さな花模様を閉じ込めたような、とんぼ玉の 人気デザイン。赤・青・黄・紫など色とりどりのガラスを組み
合わ せる技法は、古代エジプトから伝わるとされるガラス工芸の 伝統を受け継いでいる。
A popular tonbodama design that appears to seal a tiny flower pattern within the glass itself. The technique of combining vividly colored
glass—red, blue, yellow, purple—carries on a glasswork tradition said to trace back to ancient Egypt.

浮き玉文（うきだまもん）
Ukidama (Glass Fishing Float) Pattern
🔶 小樽のガラス産業の原点を伝える、歴史的な意匠に
意味 / Meaning
明治から大正にかけてのニシン漁全盛期、漁具として使われた ガラス製の浮き玉を文様化したもの。小樽の浅原硝子
製造所 （現・北一硝子）が 1910年に製造を始め、電気やプラスチックの 普及後も、小樽ガラスのルーツとして今なお象
徴的存在。
A motif depicting the glass fishing floats used as fishing gear during the peak of herring fishing from the Meiji to Taishō eras. Otaru's
Asahara Glass Works (now Kitaichi Glass) began producing them in 1910, and even after electricity and plastic became widespread, the float
remains an iconic symbol of Otaru glass's roots.

石油ランプ文（せきゆらんぷもん）
Kerosene Lamp Pattern
🔶 レトロな街並みを伝える、あたたかみのある意匠に
意味 / Meaning
電気の普及前、各家庭の明かりとして使われたガラス製の 石油ランプを文様化したもの。小樽では明治 24年（1891年）
に 井上寅蔵によって最初のガラス製造が始まったとされ、石油 ランプは浮き玉と並ぶ小樽ガラスのもうひとつのルー
ツ。
A motif depicting the glass kerosene lamps used for household lighting before electricity became widespread. The first glass production in
Otaru is said to have begun in 1891 under Torazō Inoue, with the kerosene lamp standing alongside the fishing float as another root of Otaru
glass.

🔶 冬の小樽、幻想的なナイトイベントの意匠に
意味 / Meaning
1999年から毎年 2月に開催される「小樽雪あかりの路」。 小樽運河にろうそくの灯りが浮かべられ、ガラス製の浮き玉も
幻想的な演出の一部として運河や雪の散策路に飾られる、 厳寒の小樽を象徴する冬のイベント。
Held every February since 1999, "Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi" floats candlelight along the Otaru Canal, with glass fishing floats also placed as
part of the fantastical scenery along the canal and snowy walking paths—a winter event symbolizing Otaru in the depths of the cold season.

ガラス 工房の、色とりどりの品揃えそのものを一枚に凝縮した意匠。
A capstone design for the series, freely scattering tonbodama of various designs—spirals, florals, and more. It condenses the colorful variety
found among the glass workshops lining Sakaimachi shopping street into a single composition.
